Fat Quarters vs Jelly Rolls vs Charm Packs: Fabric Pre-Cuts Explained

by CraftsFabrics Editorial Team 28 Sep 2026

Fat quarters, jelly rolls and charm packs are all fabric pre-cuts, but their shapes make them useful for very different quilting and sewing jobs. Fat quarters offer flexible rectangles, jelly rolls provide long narrow strips, and charm packs give you ready-cut squares.

If you choose the format that matches your pattern, pre-cuts can reduce preparation time and let you work with a coordinated range of prints without buying a full length of every design. This comparison explains the key differences and when each type is most useful.

Fat quarters vs jelly rolls vs charm packs at a glance

Pre-cut Common format Best for Main advantage
Fat quarter About 50 x 55 cm in a common UK metric format General patchwork, bags, appliqué, flexible cutting Wide rectangle can be cut into many shapes
Jelly roll Commonly 2.5 in wide x fabric width Strip quilts, log cabins, rail fence blocks Long strips are already cut consistently
Charm pack Commonly 5 x 5 in squares Square-based patchwork, simple quilts, small projects Minimal cutting for square designs

Dimensions and piece counts can vary between suppliers and manufacturers, so treat these as common formats rather than universal specifications. Always check the listing for the pack you plan to buy.

What is a fat quarter?

A fat quarter is a wide rectangular quarter cut of fabric. In the UK, a metric fat quarter is commonly around 50 cm x 55 cm when cut from fabric approximately 110 cm wide. It gives more usable width than a conventional 25 cm x full-width quarter-metre strip.

That makes fat quarters the most flexible of the three formats. You can cut squares, triangles, rectangles, appliqué pieces and small pattern panels from them.

What is a jelly roll?

A jelly roll is a bundle of long narrow strips, commonly around 2.5 inches wide by the width of the fabric. The strips are usually coordinated by colour or print range and are especially useful for patterns built from strip piecing.

Strip count varies. A pack may contain 20, 40 or another number of strips, so check your quilt pattern against the actual product specifications rather than assuming that “one jelly roll” always means the same quantity.

What is a charm pack?

A charm pack is a bundle of pre-cut squares, commonly around 5 x 5 inches. Because the squares are already cut to a consistent size, charm packs are convenient for simple patchwork layouts, half-square triangle techniques and projects where repeated squares are the starting unit.

As with jelly rolls, the number of squares varies by product. Check piece count, dimensions and fabric composition before choosing a quilt pattern.

Which pre-cut is best for beginners?

All three can be beginner-friendly, but the easiest choice depends on the first project:

  • Choose charm packs for a simple square patchwork layout with minimal initial cutting.
  • Choose jelly rolls for straight strip-piecing patterns that teach consistent seam allowances.
  • Choose fat quarters if you want more freedom to cut different shapes or try a variety of smaller sewing projects.

For a complete beginner who does not yet know which patchwork style they prefer, fat quarters offer the greatest flexibility.

Which pre-cut is best for a quilt?

There is no single winner because quilt patterns are designed around different units. A log cabin or rail-fence design naturally suits jelly roll strips. A simple patchwork square quilt can make excellent use of charm packs. A sampler quilt with multiple block types may suit fat quarters because each piece can be cut into several shapes.

The most efficient approach is to choose the pattern first, then buy the pre-cut format it was designed to use.

Which gives you the most fabric flexibility?

Fat quarters generally provide the most freedom because the rectangle has enough width to cut a range of shapes and sizes. Jelly rolls and charm packs exchange some of that flexibility for convenience: the cutting has already been done for a specific strip or square format.

If you like improvisational quilting or make bags and craft projects as well as quilts, fat quarters are especially versatile. If you repeat one type of quilt frequently, the matching pre-cut can save more time.

Which creates the least cutting waste?

Waste depends on the pattern, not simply on the pre-cut. A jelly roll used for a strip pattern can be extremely efficient because the strip width already matches the design. The same roll could be inefficient if you need large squares. Charm packs are efficient for 5-inch-square layouts but restrictive for larger pieces.

Fat quarters require more cutting, but their broader shape allows you to plan around different pattern pieces. Before buying, compare your cutting diagram with the actual pre-cut dimensions.

Can you mix fat quarters, jelly rolls and charm packs in one quilt?

Yes. Many quilts combine pre-cuts with background fabric, borders and larger feature pieces. You can also cut fat quarters into strips or squares to coordinate with a jelly roll or charm pack.

When mixing packs, check that the fabrics have compatible fibre content, weight and care instructions. Slight colour differences can also occur between ranges, so place the fabrics together before committing to the final layout.

How to choose between the three

Ask these questions before buying:

  • What shapes does the pattern require?
  • How many strips, squares or larger pieces are needed?
  • Does the product contain enough pieces?
  • Are the fabrics coordinated or intentionally scrappy?
  • Do you need continuous fabric for borders, backing or binding?
  • Are any prints directional?

Pre-cuts usually form part of a quilt top rather than the entire project. Remember to calculate background fabric, borders, backing, binding and wadding separately where required.

Fat quarter, jelly roll or charm pack for small sewing projects?

For pouches, appliqué, small bags and decorations, fat quarters are usually the most adaptable. Jelly rolls are excellent for strip-pieced panels that can later become cushion fronts or tote bags. Charm packs work well for coasters, patchwork panels and small square-based projects.

Frequently asked questions

Are all pre-cuts the same size?

No. Common industry sizes exist, but dimensions and piece counts vary. Always use the measurements shown on the product listing.

Do pre-cuts save money?

They mainly offer convenience and variety. Whether they cost less than fabric by the metre depends on the range, piece count and how efficiently the format suits your pattern.

Do you need to pre-wash pre-cuts?

Many quilters avoid pre-washing small pre-cuts because narrow strips and squares can fray or distort. Follow the supplier's care information and keep treatment consistent throughout the project.

Can you use pre-cuts for non-quilting projects?

Yes. Fat quarters, strips and squares can all be used for craft sewing, bags, cushions, appliqué, table décor and accessories.

Shop fabric pre-cuts by project

The best pre-cut is the one that reduces unnecessary cutting for the design you actually want to make. Choose fat quarters for flexibility, jelly rolls for strips and charm packs for ready-cut squares.
